Time for Hazelnuts to fly... #davegrohl

Where has the year gone...?
In two more days I cannot believe I will say "Goodbye!" to my little (or not so little now) Hazelnuts and also to East Harling Primary... so we had to do a grand departure...

For some time now... around October/ November, I have known that we will sing "Learn to Fly" by the Foo Fighters as our Busking Day song (before knowing much about the event!). It seemed the perfect song; the Hazelnuts would be all grown and ready to fly the nest and into Year 1.

It wasn't until looking closer at the words that I thought we might need a bit of adaptation; some words were very big for us 4 and 5 year olds. So with an "educational" twist and some "Here's some we prepared earlier" cardboard guitars, we set out to 'Rock!'

At this point I will laugh and pride myself that one Hazelnut is "super at rocking out on stage"! Yeah!

So here are some excerpts of our 'jamming' with Mr Canning, who we cannot thank enough for bringing his real guitar and helping us (especially as I am tone deaf and cannot play a thing)!

Jamming session 1: deciding on staging locations...

Rocking to an audience- There were a lot of audience members!

Thank you to everyone who came to watch, especially on such a hot day! Owing to this we kept it short and sweet-
Thank you for your donations which will all go to our whole school charity, East Anglian Air Ambulances!

A little something I found..

I am sure that none of my Hazelnut parents would ever say this to their child, but I found this poster and thought it worthy of sharing! To "fail" is to learn- we would not learn anything if we simply achieved all of the time. And for those who do find some things easy, learning to fail is a very important lesson in life. It makes us question, assess, analyse- whether it is examining why the stack of blocks fell to answering a calculation incorrectly.

I hope you find these tips useful... for us all, not just the children ;)

Evil Pea strikes again...

Well it is certainly all go in Hazelnuts at the minute...
One minute Mr Wrinkles appeared to have disappeared, the next we found him perilously perched on the edge of the top cupboard!

He was rescued but only to be missing again! As you can imagine, this caused no end of distress to us in Hazel Class! How and who could someone do this to the beloved Mr Wrinkles?!!! Luckily, the Hazelnuts found ways to save him and just in time so he could be brave and go to support one Hazelnut in his surgical operation at Addenbrookes.

However... more things have been happening! First a kidnapped apple...
A photo of poor apple that was sent with a green note...

The kidnapped apple was found on Tuesday morning! 5 days after receiving the note of his kidnapping! His poor family!!
Next a scared and suspended banana...

Gloating again Evil Pea?!

Hazelnuts to the rescue!
Then it all made sense! Some vegetables are meant to be frozen... and for just this very reason! We had been reading tales of Supertato and then it all made sense! This sounded like the work of Evil Pea!
But then he stepped up his antics...

There is only one thing we can do! Join forces and become a superhero rescue team! And end those wicked ways of Evil Pea and teach him how to make good choices!

We rescued the fruits and vegetables and took them to the Cherry Class' Emergency Medical Team for treatment!
Then we began forming the Hazelnut Superhero Rescue Centre:

We began by:

Tracking down those numbered villains and placing them all in jail! Those sticky bars will keep them at bay!

Measuring the superheroes we had... were they up for the job?

Creating a base for our superheroes and thinking about what we needed to wear...

And we made our own army of Supertatoes... who are now at home incase of any more Evil Pea wrongdoings!

We have begun writing our own comic strips in some of the daily Challenges, with some superb results! And some of us have made our own storybooks!

Our own superhero comic strips!

All the evil doing has led to lots of writing!
That Evil Pea does not know who he is messing with...
Team Hazelnuts are on the case!

If you should see any Evil Pea activity, do not hesitate to contact us!

Father's Day celebrations and a VERY busy day ** total update

 ** A Miss G update...
Thank you so much! In total we raised £397.65 (I believe)! That is a staggering amount, thank you!

A big thank you to all the Hazelnut Daddies, Granddaddies and Uncles who attended our Father's day Cake and Coffee afternoon (as well as those from Sycamore and Cherry classes too)! A HUGE thank you to everyone who donated their bakes and/or their time in helping behind the cake stall after school! On behalf of my own Daddy and the Grants, may I thank you for being so generous and in helping to support MacMillan Cancer Support. If I counted correctly at the end of my day, we have raised OVER £300!!!! There are enough cakes to feed a small country so we shall have another cake stall on Monday afternoon, so bring some pennies please!

Unfortunately it was an extremely busy day in what has been a very long and busy week. I am deeply sorry that the "Nuts" have not come home with their Father's Day gifts, I hope you can appreciate why. I really did not expect as many people to attend and hope you had a lovely afternoon (It went so quick so I am sorry if I did not get chance to talk to you!). I was very overwhelmed to see so many faces to share in their child's learning.

This is an example of the card you shall receive, again apologies for its belated-ness...

So please find your child's photo which we have reproduced in sepia and made special frames for... (to remind you why you are our superheroes!) on your child's Tapestry account. Who needs Superman or Iron Man! In case you check here before the Learning Journey I shall upload everyone's (and because they are lovely!).

And to all those who missed us "Rock Out" and sing whilst air guitaring with our homemade guitars, here is the "Demo" of the Hazelnuts do The Foo Fighters, My Hero. We have abridged Dave Grohl's lyrics for our Father's Day theme... and we clearly rock!

(Please check back soon!)

Time for a dip...

On Tuesday Hazelnuts, Mrs Smith and I trundled down to the pond for our first pond dipping session this year! We had (luckily?) planned it on a beautiful sunny afternoon and spent the afternoon learning about the pond area and how to sample the pond using our nets.

We went as a whole class and Mrs Smith and I were so proud of the Hazelnuts listening and behaviour (especially as everyone is so tired at the end of term!).

Here are our little excited faces:

First we listened carefully to the rules of the pond area and how we were to stay safe...
Then we got into small groups for some pond dipping whilst the rest of Hazelnuts enjoyed the sunshine and spectated the dipping skills of their friends...

After a busy afternoon pond dipping, all we found were two pond skaters, some damselflies and one tadpole! Oh dear!!!

We ended our afternoon with some rolling down the grassy mound of the amphitheater! This is what being four and five is all about :D

Attention Daddies...

We hope as many Hazelnut Dads can attend and with their wallets 😉

Don't worry Mummies, Daddy can buy you a cake at the cake sale for Macmillan after school!

Please support our cause,

Love Miss G

Chocolate Treasure Hunts

As part of our Easter celebrations, Hazelnuts were meant to go on a lovely Easter hunt outside...
However, by the time the day arrived to our planned timeslot, the weather had changed and so we were unable to go outside. No-one likes wet chocolate!

Never fear, an idea was born! Miss G promised the Hazelnuts that when they achieved their Marble Rocket Target for Teamwork/ Being Ready to Learn then the children could have a chocolate treasure hunt. We know that chocolate is a treat, and of course we talked about why we cannot have it all the time! But it does take us a long time to get our Marble Treat...

And so we finally got there, and on a sunny day too!

First we solved a clue that Miss G told us... it took us to the small hall!
Hazelnuts looked high and low- eventually they found the clue!
The Clue said, "Go to the pond." We had lots of super readers who read the clue in no time at all!

We then found a clue at the pond which told us to, "Go to the Nest."

Did someone say chocolate! Off they ran...

We waited at the entrance to The Nest... we reminded ourselves about the rules for our outdoor classroom...

We found them! In the Nest were enough mini chocolate bars for one each for the Hazelnuts! We looked under and over, in and beside... Hooray!
Now what do we do for our next Marble Rocket Treat??!!
