Winter's coming...

Apologies in what seems like a long time since the last post. Things have been very busy in the Hazelnuts classroom, with the erection of castles and palaces, the appearances of dragons, knights and princesses... and even the odd royal wedding!

We have been focusing on Winter over the last few weeks. A somewhat difficult concept given the changes in seasonal weather patterns. But we have had lots of fun; designing our own Winter clothing and taking photographs of each other using the school camera to create mini-me's. Take a look; we have cheeky Hazelnuts throwing snowballs, some making snow angels and others hiding behind frosty trees!

We have used our careful observations from the few snowy/frosty days to create this scene. The children have enjoyed making snowflakes from paper doilies too! If you look carefully you may even spot me (though somewhat younger, less gray and less wrinkled!).
Well done Hazelnuts on a fabulous display- watch our Dolce and Gabbana, we have some fabulous clothing designers!

Within our topic we have also put our minds to the test and used our current knowledge of ice to help rescue Elsa and Kristoff from blocks of ice! We made predictions and tried to explain our reasons why before testing them out. We used Bob the Builder's tools, hot water and salt to free our Disney friends!

Our castle roleplay, which became an Elsa Ice Castle at one point has now had a re-invigoration! Presenting Hazelnuts, new igloo...

How long it will last in a warm classroom environment no-one knows... But it shall have a few finishing touches including a hole to fish for CVC worded fish from below "the ice floor".

In maths we have explored repeating patterns, with some children using this as inspiration for their Winter clothes. This week we have been refining our counting skills and exploring early place value, using ten-cube ice trays and penguins. We have estimated the number of penguins in a huddle before counting them and finding this value in numicon. Well done guys!

Do ya wanna build a snowman....?

Ta-Da Our finished and packaged Melting Snowmen!
Here is a little taster of Hazelnuts making their melting Christmas snowmen biscuits! We hope you got to see them... even if you did not get a bite!

As you can see, lots of attention to detail and concentration went into our snowmen! And these can be made whatever the weather!

Olaf would be proud (if not a little worried!)

Our first Christmas dinner at school

Apologies if I was unable to capture your child with their Christmas dinner/ Christmas packed lunch! I did try to snap the Hazelnuts at their tables, but as you can imagine, it was all systems go!

With the sounds of Kylie Minogue singing classic Christmas hits, the hustle and bustle of our fabulous kitchen staff (with Mrs Barton on the puddings), the children chatted and sang merrily. We had crackers and staff wore festive attire- The only thing missing was the Queen's speech ;)

Party time!

Just before Christmas, we put our glad rags on and we boogied to some tunes at the Early Years Christmas Party. Hazelnuts, Cherries and Pippins all enjoyed showing off their dance moves before some traditional party games!
Beware... Hazelnuts have some champion Musical Statues competitors! We enjoyed Musical Bumps and Pass the Parcel too!
Take a look at our photographs...
